Annually, the Black LGBTQ+ community gathers in Los Angeles to recognize and honor those who have made an impact on popular culture, politics, and the arts, provide scholarships to LGBTQ+ youth, and thank those called ally.
Better Brothers Los Angeles (BBLA) was created to provide spaces for members of the Black LGBTQ Community to network, socialize and be BETTER – at Life, Love and Community.

This unforgettable celebration of Black LGBTQ+ excellence and resilience was hosted by the dynamic duo of Scott Evans and Wendy Raquel Robinson. The evening celebrated the achievements of individuals who are making a profound impact across various fields:
Karrine Jean-Pierre: White House Press Secretary, for her groundbreaking achievements in politics and representation with the History Maker Award.
Lena Waithe: Visionary writer, producer, and actress, for her powerful storytelling and advocacy with the Culture & Arts Award.
Patrik-Ian Polk: Acclaimed filmmaker and television director, for his pioneering work in Black queer cinema with the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Mona Scott-Young: Media mogul and entertainment executive, for her unwavering allyship and support with the Ally Award.
Bryon Javar: Celebrity stylist for his influence on style and culture with the Andre Leon Talley Style Purveyor Award.
Dr. Bettina Love: Award-winning author and scholar, for her dedication to educational justice and Black youth liberation with the Excellence in Education Award.
Dr. David Johns: Social justice advocate for his leadership in fighting for equity and liberation with the Bayard Rustin Advocacy Award.
Sam Prater: Business executive and community leader, for his impactful contributions in reducing unhoused college students by providing affordable transitional housing with the Business Leadership Award.
The celebration was electrified with performances from Grammy Award-winning hip-hop artist and celebrated LGBTQ+ icon Big Freedia, and Hailey Kilgore, a Tony Award-nominated actress and breakout star of “Power Book III: Raising Kanan” on STARZ.
Special appearances were made by Colman Domingo, Janelle Monáe, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Jussie Smollett, Jason Lee, Brian Jordan Jr., Jeremelle Simon, Melvin Robert, Greg Mathis Jr., Tim Pulliam, Omar Lewis, Elliott Cooper, Darnell L. Moore, Dr. Shaun Harper, Darwin Thompson and Armond Kinsey celebrating the impact the Black LGBTQ+ has made on popular culture, politics, education and the arts.
